Project Overview
The Fort Washington Cross County Trail (Middle Section) project executed a critical 0.5-mile road diet and trail expansion along Delaware and Virginia Drives. By narrowing the existing roadway from a 44-foot, four-lane layout to a 37-foot, three-lane configuration with a common center turn lane, the project successfully created space for a new 10 to 12-foot wide segment of the regional Cross County Circuit Trail. To provide further traffic calming and beautification, three landscaped medians were constructed where driveway gaps permitted.
Beyond surface-level mobility and safety improvements, the project integrated subterranean infrastructure upgrades. Roadway drainage and best management practice stormwater systems were installed to mitigate recurring flooding. Furthermore, the construction was sequenced to include the replacement of 50-year-old North Wales Water Authority mains and the installation of a Bucks County Water and Sewer Authority force main, ensuring the newly paved roadways will not require future trenching. This locally funded segment serves as a catalyst for Montgomery County’s initiative to complete the entire 20-mile Circuit Trail network.
